Where did rice originate?
Rice first originated thousands of years ago in Ancient China. It was then found in other countries such as India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and northern Vietnam. The domestication of rice is considered to be one of the most important developments in human history. Rice is one of the oldest harvested crops known to man. Grains of rice discovered at an excavation in South Korea in 2003 are said to be the earliest known domesticated rice, archaeologists found that the grains were 15,000 years old – 3,000 years earlier than what was previously thought for the origin of rice.
What was rice used for in Ancient China?
In Ancient China, rice was an important part of life, not only was it the main source of food it also helped to develop Ancient Chinese culture. One example is the Land Opening festival which is held every year to celebrate the start of the rice cultivation season. There are many traditional Chinese dishes that incorporate rice into their recipes, and we still enjoy these meals today, one example is fried rice.
